President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia will be represented by Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, SC, MP, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, at the 6th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the African Union (AU), to be held on July 21, 2024, in Accra, Ghana.

Zambia will attend the meeting in its capacity as Chair of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Authority.

Hosted by His Excellency Dr. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana, the meeting will take place under the AU’s 2024 theme: “Educate an African Fit for the 21st Century: Building Resilient Education Systems for Increased Access to Inclusive, Lifelong, Quality, and Relevant Learning in Africa.”

The Mid-Year Coordination Meeting will gather the Heads of State and Government who form the Bureau of the AU Assembly and the eight Heads of State and Government who Chair the eight Regional Economic Communities (RECs).

This gathering aims to assess the status of continental integration, coordinate implementation efforts of the integration process, and harmonize AU and REC policies.

Before the Mid-Year Coordination Meeting, Hon. Haimbe will participate in the 45th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council (Session of Ministers) of the African Union, scheduled for July 18-19, 2024.

Hon. Haimbe emphasized Zambia’s commitment to working with other African nations to advance the agenda for greater integration, crucial for actualizing the gains of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

He noted that this presents a significant opportunity to fulfill common development aspirations, reduce poverty, and promote growth and inclusion for the benefit of the African people.
