Zambia Seeks K100 Million to Host World Skills Africa Competition 2025

World Skills Zambia is on a mission to raise K100 million to host the World Skills Africa Competition in Livingstone in April 2025. Zambia secured the bid to host the prestigious event in 2022, which will see 1,500 participants from across the continent competing at the Livingstone Institute of Business and Engineering Studies (LIBES).

The Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Authority (TEVETA), under the Ministry of Technology and Science, houses the World Skills Zambia secretariat.

Technology and Science Minister Hon. Felix Chipota Mutati is urging the private sector to partner with World Skills Zambia to meet the financial target necessary for hosting the competition.

Speaking at a media breakfast in Lusaka, Mr. Mutati highlighted President Hakainde Hichilema’s recognition as a champion in skills development, emphasizing the significance of successfully hosting the event.

He also called on industry leaders to provide internships and attachments for Zambian youths participating in the competition.

“There is no way one can be successful unless they practice. So we are asking captains of industry to allow our youths to do attachments, placements, and internships at your companies. They need to sharpen their skills,” said Mr. Mutati.

Immediate Past President of the Engineering Institution of Zambia, Abel Ng’andu, echoed the call for private sector support, stressing the high cost of skills development and the need for significant backing from non-state actors.

Project Manager for the World Skills Africa Organising Team, Precious Lisulo, stated that hosting the competition will enhance Zambia’s profile. “The event is prestigious, and Zambia will do everything possible to make it successful,” said Ms. Lisulo.

The World Skills Africa Competition will feature 20 skill categories, with Zambia confirming participation in all. The event promises to be a landmark occasion for the nation, highlighting its commitment to advancing technical education and vocational training on the continent.
