Govt Lauds ZMDA for K2 Million Investment in Lusaka
The Zambian government has commended the Zambia Motor Dealers Association (ZMDA) for their significant investment of over K2 million in establishing a new motor dealership yard in Lusaka.
Minister of Transport and Logistics, Frank Tayali, praised the ZMDA for fostering a supportive and regulated business climate, highlighting the association’s efforts as a model for empowerment and economic collaboration.
“On behalf of the government, I wish to state that your commitment to support car dealers is highly commendable and appreciated,” Minister Tayali said during the launch of the new ZMDA car dealership yard in Thornpark.
He emphasized that the association’s initiatives have provided the government with a framework to support the motor dealership sector and explore future empowerment opportunities.
The new facility, established in collaboration with Zambia Railways Limited, serves as a symbol of unity and effective partnership. Minister Tayali noted that the collaboration will generate non-railway revenue for Zambia Railways, making it a win-win situation.
“This land was idle, but through this collaboration, Zambia Railways will earn non-railway revenue as the landlord,” he stated.
In an exclusive interview with ZANIS, ZMDA Chairperson Kelvin Kameta shared that the association invested more than K2 million to realize the dream of owning a permanent trading place.
He expressed the association’s ambition to expand beyond Lusaka and bring order to car dealerships across Zambia.
“Our aim is to bring every car dealer in Zambia together. We want to bring everyone on board by putting in place a national executive at the national level in the next few months,” Kameta said.
Kameta also revealed that the association has entered into an agreement with LOLC Finance Zambia, enabling the public to purchase vehicles at the ZMDA car yard through a vehicle financing scheme.
He credited the government’s assistance in securing a permanent trading place through Zambia Railways Limited.
Andrew Phiri, a member of the association and car dealer, expressed his gratitude for the new facility. He highlighted the challenges faced at their previous location near the Freedom Statue, including high costs associated with moving vehicles daily.
“Now that a permanent place has been established, we are grateful that our vehicles will be saved from tear and wear due to the fixed place,” Phiri said.
