MISA Zambia Applauds Government for Implementing ATI Law

The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Zambia Chapter has praised the Zambian government for the operationalisation of the Access To Information (ATI) Law, marked by the signing of Statutory Instrument (SI) No. 35 of 2024.

This development, according to MISA-Zambia Chairperson Lorraine Chisanga, represents a significant stride towards enhancing transparency, accountability, and good governance in the country.

Ms. Chisanga emphasized that with the ATI Law now in effect, citizens gain the right to access crucial information on public matters, promoting informed decision-making and civic engagement.

She underscored MISA Zambia’s longstanding advocacy for such legislation, highlighting its role in bolstering democracy and sustainable development.

In a statement issued in Lusaka, Ms. Chisanga noted that the operationalisation of the ATI Law reflects the government’s commitment to upholding the fundamental right to information, essential for safeguarding other human rights and freedoms.

She outlined multiple benefits of the law, including increased governmental transparency, reduced corruption risks, and enhanced citizen participation in governance.

Furthermore, Ms. Chisanga highlighted the ATI Law’s significance for journalists and media practitioners, providing a legal framework for information access and dissemination. This, she believes, will strengthen investigative journalism and facilitate the free flow of information across Zambia.

Calling for active engagement from civil society organizations (CSOs), media professionals, and the public in utilizing the ATI Law, Ms. Chisanga expressed MISA Zambia’s dedication to collaborating with stakeholders to uphold media freedoms and ensure the law’s effective implementation.

In conclusion, Ms. Chisanga expressed optimism that the operationalisation of the ATI Law will contribute to a more transparent and democratic Zambia, setting a positive precedent for governance and public accountability.
