Zambia and South Korea Strengthen Bilateral Ties at Korea-Africa Summit
Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, SC, M.P, Zambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, held a bilateral meeting with Mr. Cho Tae-Yul, South Korea’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, during the 2024 Korea-Africa Summit.
Hon. Haimbe commended South Korea for its successful hosting of the summit and expressed Zambia’s support for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
He thanked Korea for its contributions to Zambia, including a US$285,000 donation for ministry vehicles, educational support through KOICA, and the Global Korea Scholarships (GKS) Graduate Degree Programme.
Highlighting future collaboration, Hon. Haimbe expressed Zambia’s interest in joining Korea’s K-Ricebelt Initiative to enhance rice production in Africa.
He also invited Korean companies to invest in Zambia’s Multi-Facility Economic Zones, leveraging regional markets such as SADC, COMESA, and the AfCFTA.
Additionally, Hon. Haimbe emphasized cooperation between the Zambia Development Agency and Korea Trade Investments Promotion Agency to utilize Korea’s expanded Official Development Assistance of US$10 billion.
This includes developing industrial parks and utilizing the US$14 billion in export financing to boost trade and investment.
Addressing Zambia’s energy crisis, Hon. Haimbe called for strategic partnerships with Korea to advance the energy sector.
The inaugural Korea-Africa Summit, held from June 4th to 5th, 2024, marked a significant step in strengthening Korea-Africa relations.
