UN Calls for Global Action to End Conflict in Africa’s Great Lakes Region
The United Nations (UN) is urging the international community to help stop the ongoing violence in Africa’s Great Lakes region, specifically the recent clashes between the Congolese army and M23 rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his deep concern about the renewed fighting, which has displaced tens of thousands of people in eastern DRC.
He emphasized the need for a global response, highlighting the failure of the current international order to prevent such conflicts.
Guterres stressed the UN’s commitment to supporting the African Union’s peace efforts.
He pledged to mobilize the international community to bring peace not only to the Great Lakes region but also to other conflict zones across Africa, including the Sahel and the Horn of Africa.
The UN chief also addressed criticism that the organization neglects African conflicts compared to others.
He pointed out the significant UN peacekeeping presence in Africa and the sacrifices made by peacekeepers in the region.
He highlighted the UN’s political missions and regional offices working to resolve conflicts and support affected populations.
Guterres concluded his appeal by urging political leaders and media outlets to give the same level of attention to African conflicts as they do to those in other parts of the world.
He underscored the severity of these conflicts, emphasizing their global impact and the immense suffering they cause.
