Zambia Boosts Road Projects with K2.6 Billion Disbursement

Zambia has given its road infrastructure a significant boost by disbursing K2.6 billion to the National Road Fund Agency (NRFA) in the first quarter of 2024. This funding aims to improve the country’s road network through various projects and activities.

Out of the total K2.6 billion, K2.5 billion has been directly allocated for road projects and related activities. This includes essential maintenance and construction work.

Additionally, K1.1 billion has been dedicated to servicing existing road sector loans. The remaining funds will be used to clear outstanding payments owed to road contractors and consultants, ensuring they can continue their vital work.

The disbursement strategy highlights the government’s commitment to a multi-agency approach. The Road Development Agency (RDA) has received K803 million for ongoing road projects, while the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD) has been allocated K445 million for its own road initiatives.

Road safety is also a priority, with K17.8 million allocated to the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) for their efforts.

The announcement further revealed plans to modernize the Mweeke Toll Station located between Kaoma and Mongu. This relocation to a new, upgraded facility with modern infrastructure marks the beginning of a wider program.

The government intends to extend these improvements to all Class C Toll Stations across Zambia, creating a more efficient and user-friendly experience for travelers.

In conclusion, the K2.6 billion disbursement signifies a multi-pronged approach by the Zambian government to address the country’s road network. The targeted allocation of funds across different agencies, combined with the modernization of toll stations, demonstrates a commitment to comprehensive improvements in road infrastructure.
