LCC Urges Responsible Waste Disposal to Safeguard Public Health
The Lusaka City Council (LCC) is urging residents to take responsibility for their waste and stop dumping garbage in unauthorized locations. This indiscriminate disposal of waste is a serious health hazard, creating breeding grounds for disease and contributing to a dirty environment.
LCC Public Relations Manager, Chola Mwamba, highlighted the dangers of littering and illegal dumping during a recent training session. She emphasized that this is not just an unpleasant issue but a public health risk.
To combat this problem, the LCC is promoting the “polluter pays principle.” This principle encourages residents and businesses to subscribe to registered solid waste collection companies. By subscribing to these services, residents can ensure their waste is disposed of properly and contribute to a cleaner city.
The LCC’s message is a call to action for all Lusaka residents. By following these guidelines and working together with the Council, residents can play a crucial role in achieving a more sustainable waste management system for the city.
However, challenges remain. Enforcing responsible waste disposal, particularly in underserved areas, will require ongoing efforts. Public awareness campaigns alongside enforcement can be crucial in promoting a cultural shift towards responsible waste management.
Additionally, collaboration with registered waste collection companies is essential to ensure comprehensive waste collection services are available throughout Lusaka.
The LCC’s initiative holds promise for improving sanitation and public health in Lusaka. By adopting a multi-faceted approach that combines education, enforcement, and collaboration, the city can move towards a cleaner and healthier future for its residents.
