Zambia Cracks Down on Immigration Offenses: Over 140 Removed, Dozens Detained and Convicted
Zambia’s Department of Immigration conducted a successful two-day operation removing 142 illegal immigrants from the country. The majority, 58 Ethiopians and 6 Somalis, were apprehended during this exercise.
Public Relations Officer Mr. Namati H. Nshinka elaborated that these removals are part of a broader nationwide effort.
He added that 62 additional individuals were apprehended for various immigration offenses across the country between April 13th and 14th.
Prior to the mass removal, the Lusaka Regional Immigration Office conducted a routine check-up on April 12th, detaining 25 suspected illegal immigrants.
These individuals, from Burundi, Congo, China, Rwanda, and Tanzania, are awaiting prosecution.
Immigration authorities also secured convictions in several cases. A Ugandan national, Andrew Walakira, was found guilty of possessing multiple passports and overstaying his visa. He received fines for both offenses.
In Luanshya, two Zimbabweans, Levy Zulu and Mupakayiri Severia, were convicted of illegal entry, while a third Zimbabwean, Gandiwa Tadiwanashe, faced consequences for overstaying his visa. All three received fines.
These convictions, along with Mr. Walakira’s, bring the total number of convictions secured by the Department on April 12th to 15.
The Department of Immigration also deported two prohibited immigrants and refused entry to two foreign nationals who failed to meet entry requirements, all between April 13th and 14th.
