North-Western Province Gets Boost as Zambia Upgrades Key Roads
North-Western Province is set for a significant infrastructure improvement as the Zambian government advances plans to upgrade key roads in the region.
These upgrades aim to enhance connectivity within the province, connect Zambia to neighboring countries, and unlock the economic potential of the region.
Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Minister, Hon. Eng. Charles L. Milupi, announced the upcoming improvements during a visit to Solwezi.
A Public-Private Partnership (PPP) financing model will be used to upgrade the Solwezi-Kipushi Road, a vital economic connector between Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) via the Kipushi Border Post.
Minister Milupi reported that a private partner (concessionaire) has been selected, and negotiations are nearing completion.
He emphasized the importance of North-Western Province to Zambia’s economic growth, citing its abundant natural resources and favorable climate. Upgrading the Solwezi-Kipushi Road is seen as a crucial step in unlocking this potential.
The Lumwana-Kambimba Road, another critical link connecting Zambia to the DRC, is also slated for improvement. A concession agreement for this 85-kilometer upgrade project, including border facility construction, was signed with Messrs. Sandstone Limited in September 2023.
Financial closure is expected soon, paving the way for construction to begin. This improved road will provide access to the thriving mining operations in Kolwezi, DRC.
The Mwinilunga-Jimbe Road, a vital link to Angola, is another route earmarked for future upgrades. These infrastructure advancements will significantly enhance trade and economic activity between Zambia and its neighbors.
Minister Milupi’s visit to North-Western Province underscores the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure in the region.
His itinerary includes commissioning five ACROW bridges in Zambezi District and the Manyinga Town Council Office Block, further demonstrating the focus on development initiatives across the province.
