Joint Operation Nets Five Arrests for Violation of Illegal Beverage Production Health Breaches

In a collaborative effort led by the Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) and the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC), along with support from the Immigration Department, the National Anti-Terrorism Centre (NAC), and the Zambia Police, a joint operation has resulted in the apprehension of five individuals associated with Precision Royal Beverages Ltd.

The arrests are in connection with illegal production and distribution of beverages, including packaged water, as well as immigration-related offenses.

The crackdown comes as a response to grave breaches of health and safety standards. Precision Royal Beverages Ltd was found to be operating without the necessary permits and failing to meet the minimum parameters for production outlined in the Compulsory Standards Act No.3 of 2017.

The suspects, identified as Derrick Mukwemba, Jonathan Mukwaya, Geoffrey Kayemba, Mediotrice Habonimana, and Sameal Tusubire Mwanza, were all residing within the premises of the company building in Barlastone, Lusaka West.

During the operation, authorities conducted a thorough search which led to the confiscation of 1610 cases of Royal Sachet Water, 955 cases of Royal Kumbucha Fermented Tea, 349 cases of Royal Kumbucha, and 48 cases of Royal Ginger Wine. It was revealed that the beverages were being packaged in unsanitary conditions, posing a significant risk to consumers’ safety.

Derrick Mukwemba has been placed in custody to assist with investigations and is expected to face charges including tax evasion and money laundering-related offenses. Additionally, three vehicles, including a Benz truck, a light truck canter, and a small Mitsubishi bus, have been seized.

This operation underscores the critical importance of collaborative efforts between regulatory agencies to uphold public health and safety standards. Consumers can rest assured that authorities are actively working to ensure that products on the market meet stringent safety requirements and that those who flout regulations will face legal consequences.

ZCSA, DEC, and other government agencies remain committed to safeguarding the welfare of citizens through continued vigilance and collaborative action. The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to product safety, as citizen participation is crucial in combating illegal practices.
