FQM Expands Tree Planting Efforts in Solwezi, Zambia
First Quantum Minerals (FQM) has announced an ambitious expansion of its tree planting initiatives at the Kansanshi Mine in Solwezi, Zambia, in a concerted effort to bolster environmental conservation and sustainable mining practices.
This year, the company aims to plant a staggering 30,000 trees and rehabilitate over 35 hectares of mine-disturbed land, nearly doubling its efforts from the previous year.
Arnold Malambo, Manager Environment at Kansanshi Mine, emphasized the company’s commitment to responsible resource extraction and environmental stewardship.
He highlighted the rigorous approval process for tree cutting and vegetation clearance, emphasizing the importance of preserving topsoil for future land rehabilitation efforts.
Malambo stressed that progressive mine rehabilitation through tree planting forms a crucial aspect of FQM’s sustainability strategy and social responsibility initiatives.
The decision to intensify tree planting efforts stems from the recognition of the prolonged growth cycle of trees and the desire to fully re-establish forests within the mine’s operational area by the time of closure.
Malambo underscored the multifaceted benefits of tree planting, including mitigating the adverse effects of climate change, enhancing food security, and promoting soil conservation and fertility.
During the provincial tree planting initiative’s official launch earlier this year, North-Western Provincial Minister Robert Lihefu commended FQM’s endeavors and emphasized the government’s support for tree planting initiatives as a vital measure against climate change and for ensuring food security.
Minister Lihefu acknowledged FQM’s sustainable agroforestry programs and highlighted their potential to create economic opportunities for local communities.
However, Chief Mumena of the North-Western Province Council of Chiefs expressed concerns over the escalating rate of deforestation in the province. He urged for sustained tree planting efforts and the development of alternative livelihoods to deter reliance on tree cutting for income generation.
FQM reiterated its commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to safeguard Zambia’s biodiversity. The company has invested over US$6 million in environmental protection programs aimed at mitigating the carbon impact of its mining activities on the environment and local communities.
