President Hakainde Hichilema to Attend African Union Summit in Ethiopia
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has announced that President Hakainde Hichilema of the Republic of Zambia will participate in the 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.
The summit is scheduled to take place from February 17th to 18th, 2024, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
As the highest decision-making body of the African Union, President Hichilema’s participation holds significant importance.
During his visit to Ethiopia, President Hichilema will engage in various meetings, including the Heads of State and Government Dialogue on Establishing African Union Financial Institutions, and discussions on climate change with the Committee of African Heads of State and Government.
The theme of this year’s Assembly is “Educate an African Fit for the 21st Century: Building Resilient Education Systems for Increased Access to Inclusive, Lifelong, Quality, and Relevant Learning in Africa.” Key agenda items include African Union Institutional Reforms, peace and security issues, and the African Union’s role in the G20.
President Hichilema’s engagements at the summit are expected to advance Zambia’s economic transformation program and contribute to broader continental objectives.
The summit offers a valuable platform for Zambia to promote its national interests on both the continental and global stages, while also participating in decision-making on critical issues such as economic integration, sustainable development, and peace and security in Africa.
The President’s attendance follows the preceding 44th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council (Session of Ministers) of the African Union, which took place from February 14th to 15th, 2024.
Upon completion of his engagements, President Hichilema is expected to return to Zambia immediately.
