Malawi Receives Extra Funding to Fight Malnutrition

Malawi has received additional funding of MWK6.3 billion from the German Government to support the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) project in five districts: Blantyre, Dowa, Nsanje, Phalombe, and Lilongwe.

The Minister of Health, Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, expressed gratitude for the timely support, especially as Malawi faces a food security crisis affecting around 4.4 million people from October 2023 to March 2024. The funding will aid in improving lives and enhancing the resilience of vulnerable groups.

The Germany Ambassador to Malawi, Ute Konig, highlighted the importance of a balanced diet for everyone, underscoring the reason for providing these additional funds.

Through the SUN program, which has been ongoing since 2011 with technical support from UNICEF, the prevalence of stunting among children under five years old has reduced from 37 percent in 2016 to the current rate of 33 percent, according to the 2020 Integrated Household Survey.

This funding will contribute to the fight against malnutrition and its associated challenges in Malawi.
