Drug Enforcement Commission in Zambia Arrests Two individuals for Smuggling Over 19 Kilograms of Cannabis
The Drug Enforcement Commission in Southern Province has arrested a Kenyan and a person from Eswatini for smuggling over 19 kilograms of loose cannabis in separate incidents.
According to Hussein Khan, the Public Relations Officer in a statement released earlier today, Stephen Juma Obura, 47, and Vusi Ntshingila, 38, have been charged with Trafficking in Psychotropic Substances under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act No. 35 of 2021 in Zambia.
Obura was apprehended in a special operation at a lodge in Kazungula with 18.5 kilograms of loose cannabis. A Toyota Noah with registration number KCA 206L was seized in connection with the case.
Meanwhile, Ntshingila was intercepted at the Kazungula One Stop Border Post. During a search of his truck (a Freightliner with registration number MOTHEGB 2L), authorities discovered 855.8 grams of loose cannabis. The truck was also seized. Both suspects are currently in custody and will appear in court soon.
The Commission acknowledges that border areas are vulnerable to various transnational crimes, including drug trafficking, due to their geographic location. Consequently, the Commission has increased surveillance measures to address the issue of drug trafficking in the country.
