Tshisekedi Announces Plans to Amend Constitution, Extend Stay in Power
Democratic Republic of Congo President Félix Tshisekedi has confirmed his intention to revise the country’s constitution to extend his stay in power beyond his current and final term, which ends in 2028.
Tshisekedi plans to establish a national multi-disciplinary commission to address the issue of constitutional amendment in the coming days.
He argues that the current constitution is outdated and no longer aligned with the political realities of the nation.
In a recent address to Congolese citizens living in Belgium, Tshisekedi stated, “I am a strong supporter of updating our constitution. Our current constitution was designed after a conflict and does not reflect the needs of our country. We need a constitution that is worthy of the Democratic Republic of Congo.”
The existing Congolese constitution limits presidents to serving two terms, meaning Tshisekedi would not be eligible to run for re-election after his current term.
However, he seeks to modify the constitution to extend his tenure in office.
Tshisekedi’s announcement has raised concerns about democratic principles and the consolidation of power.
Critics view his move as an attempt to circumvent term limits and prolong his rule, potentially undermining democratic governance in the country.
The decision to revise the constitution has sparked debates among Congolese citizens and drawn international attention to the political situation in the DRC.
Many are closely monitoring developments to see how Tshisekedi’s plans unfold and the implications they may have for the future of democracy in the country.
