Urgent Call for Collective Responsibility in Addressing Zambia’s Economic Crisis
Renowned good governance and human rights activist, Sikaile C Sikaile, has shed light on the multifaceted nature of Zambia’s economic challenges, emphasizing the need for collective action beyond individual blame.
In his recent address, Sikaile highlighted the prevalent misconception that places the entire burden of Zambia’s development solely on President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration.
He underscored the importance of understanding the broader context, including the legacy of heavy borrowing by previous administrations, which significantly contributed to the current economic predicament.
Drawing attention to key figures like former President Lungu and past finance ministers, Sikaile urged for transparency regarding the accumulation of debts.
He emphasized the responsibility of current officials, such as Felix Mutati, now serving under the UPND government, to provide insights into these challenges.
Sikaile commended President Hichilema’s administration for its earnest efforts in addressing the economic crisis, particularly in debt restructuring negotiations with international entities like the IMF and World Bank.
However, he cautioned against solely attributing blame to external factors, highlighting internal inefficiencies within public institutions and a lackadaisical work culture as exacerbating factors.
Addressing the prevalence of incompetence within government institutions, Sikaile called for urgent reform, proposing the institution of independent monitors to foster accountability.
He emphasized the need for a paradigm shift towards results-oriented practices to drive Zambia towards prosperity.
Furthermore, Sikaile underscored the crucial role of ordinary citizens in fostering development, urging for patriotism and resilience, even in simple acts like cultivating homegrown produce.
In a direct plea to the UPND government, Sikaile urged for the overhaul of the prevailing work culture hindering policy implementation.
He called for accountability for senior officials neglecting their duties, stressing the importance of strong leadership in eradicating incompetence and ensuring judicious use of public resources.
