Zambia Boosts Sports Funding and Infrastructure Development
The Zambian government is taking a multi-pronged approach to boost the country’s sporting scene. This includes financial rewards for athletes, investment in infrastructure development, and support for various sports disciplines.
Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts, Hon. Elvis Nkandu, announced a K4.2 million Kwacha bonus for the Zambia Senior Women’s football team, also known as the “Copper Queens.” This reward recognizes their historic achievement of qualifying for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Additionally, Zambian athletes who represented the nation at the 2023 African Games in Ghana were not forgotten. They received a combined K2.9 million Kwacha in recognition of their efforts.
Understanding the importance of nurturing talent from the ground up, the government allocated K30 million for community sports initiatives. K10 million of this funding has already been distributed to local authorities across Zambia, with the remaining amount to be disbursed soon.
The government is committed to creating a more conducive environment for sports participation by constructing state-of-the-art sports facilities. This initiative aims to increase accessibility and encourage people of all ages to engage in physical activities.
The Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts emphasizes its dedication to fostering a well-rounded sporting culture. Hon. Nkandu highlighted that over 40 different sports codes have been financially supported by the ministry to compete in international events. This demonstrates a commitment to promoting a diverse range of sports, not just traditional favorites.
Minister Nkandu extended his congratulations to both the Copper Queens and Zambian athletes who participated in the 2023 African Games. Their outstanding performances, including bringing home 15 medals from Ghana, have garnered national pride.
Hon. Nkandu also offered well wishes for a speedy recovery to former national team captain Rainford Kalaba, who is currently hospitalized following a car accident. This message signifies the government’s concern for the well-being of athletes beyond their sporting achievements.
Zambia will be playing host to the prestigious 2023 Regional Annual Sports Awards on May 25th, 2024. This event, expected to see participation from 10 countries, underscores Zambia’s growing role in the regional sporting landscape.
