Zambian President Hosts UN Special Representative to Address Child Welfare
President Hakainde Hichilema welcomed a delegation led by Dr. Najat Maala, the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence Against Children at the State House.
The gathering focused on the critical issues affecting children today, notably child trafficking, smuggling, and the plight of children inadvertently detained due to their mothers’ incarceration.
President Hichilema reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment, alongside its partners, to tackle these challenges head-on. The administration has enacted laws supporting child protection and welfare policies, with a particular emphasis on social welfare investments.
These include initiatives such as free education and school feeding programs aimed at encouraging prolonged school attendance, ensuring children’s access to education and nourishment.
While acknowledging the detrimental effects of child labor, President Hichilema conveyed to Dr. Maala the importance of instilling a work ethic during children’s formative years.
He stressed that such experiences contribute significantly to character development and skill acquisition. To this end, the government is poised to enhance efforts in early childhood skills development, underscoring its commitment to fostering a holistic approach to child welfare.
The meeting underscores Zambia’s dedication to addressing the multifaceted challenges faced by its youth population. Through collaborative efforts with international organizations like the United Nations, the government aims to enact meaningful change and secure a brighter future for its children.
