SADC Infrastructure Planning Session in Kasane Sets Stage for Accelerated Regional Integration
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) recently concluded its annual Infrastructure Performance Review and Planning Session in Kasane, Botswana.
Over the course of a week, stakeholders from across the region convened under the theme “Accelerating the implementation of the SADC Regional Infrastructure Development Master Plan (RIDMP) 2027 and SADC Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP 2020-2030).”
This crucial gathering, organized by the SADC Secretariat Directorate of Infrastructure, served as a platform for reflection, assessment, and forward planning to bolster regional integration through robust infrastructure development.
Ms. Angele Makombo N’tumba, SADC Deputy Executive Secretary for Regional Integration, lauded the commitment of implementing agencies and International Cooperation Partners (ICPs) in fostering collaboration with the SADC Secretariat.
She emphasized the imperative of bolstering climate services to mitigate climate-related disasters and addressing challenges such as power shortages hindering economic progress in the region.
Dr. Judith Kateera, SADC Deputy Executive Secretary for Corporate Affairs, underscored the importance of long-term funding strategies for priority projects. She advocated for innovative financing mechanisms and partnerships to mobilize resources effectively.
Ms. Mapolao Mokoena, Infrastructure Director at the SADC Secretariat, highlighted the session’s significance in fostering teamwork, setting goals, and enhancing communication to drive the collective agenda of infrastructure development in line with the SADC vision.
Throughout the week, various activities including panel discussions, presentations, and field visits were conducted to deepen understanding, review progress, and strategize for impactful outcomes.
Attendees included SADC Regional Infrastructure Implementing Partners, International Cooperating Partners (ICPs), and entities such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), European Union (EU) Delegation to Botswana, and Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs).
The session culminated in a renewed commitment to accelerate infrastructure development, enhance collaboration, and promote sustainable regional integration across sectors including energy, ICT, transportation, and water management.
With a shared vision and concerted efforts, the SADC region is set to realize its infrastructure development goals, laying the foundation for economic prosperity and improved livelihoods for its citizens.
