Major Funding and Partnership Agreements Signed to Upgrade Nakonde One Stop Border Post
The Government of the Republic of Zambia, in collaboration with Trademark Africa (TMA), the United Kingdom, and the World Bank, has signed a Partner Support Agreement (PSA) to upgrade the Nakonde One Stop Border Post (OSBP).
The PSA, heralded as a significant milestone by Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane, MP, Minister of Finance & National Planning, underscores a collective effort to transform infrastructure, streamline clearance processes, and boost efficiency at one of Zambia’s busiest entry/exit points.
Nakonde OSBP plays a pivotal role in facilitating trade not only between Zambia and Tanzania but also with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zimbabwe.
Key interventions outlined in the agreement include infrastructure upgrades, deployment of modern scanning systems, digitization of clearance processes, and cross-border interconnectivity for seamless information exchange. These initiatives aim to reduce congestion, cut down cargo dwell time, and ultimately enhance trade flows, economic growth, and prosperity across the region.
The UK’s commitment to the project is highlighted by an initial grant of USD 8.2 million, with additional funding to cover project costs exceeding expectations.
The World Bank, through its Transport Corridors for Economic Resilience (TRACER) Project, has approved a substantial grant of US$270 million to finance critical infrastructure development at Nakonde OSBP, further solidifying the partnership’s dedication to the project’s success.
David Beer, TMA’s Chief Executive Officer, emphasized the organization’s mission to enhance operational efficiency through digitalization and build stronger trade links along the Dar-Es-Salaam Corridor. TMA’s track record in reducing trade costs and improving border efficiency across Africa brings invaluable expertise to the Nakonde project.
Nicholas Woolley, the British High Commissioner, reiterated the UK’s commitment to supporting Zambia’s regional integration efforts and emphasized the importance of sustainable mechanisms for long-term project delivery and maintenance.
Dr. Achim Fock, World Bank Country Manager for Zambia, highlighted the pivotal role of international trade in Zambia’s development and expressed confidence that the Nakonde OSBP upgrades would significantly facilitate trade and contribute to overall development in Zambia and neighboring states.
