Zamtel Appoints New CEO
Zambia Telecommunications Company Limited (ZAMTEL) has announced the appointment of Jason Mwanza as its Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective March 1st, 2024.
The decision was made by the company’s Board of Directors, marking Mwanza’s official elevation to the position after serving as Acting CEO.
Mwanza brings a wealth of experience to his new role, holding a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical & Electronics with a specialization in Telecommunications from Copperbelt University (CBU).
He furthered his education with a Master of Science in Telecommunications Engineering from Blekinge Institute of Technology in Sweden and obtained a Master of Business Administration from Edinburgh Business School.
With over 19 years of experience in technology planning, operational management, business development, and strategic leadership, Mwanza is well-equipped to lead Zamtel into a new phase of growth.
His tenure at Zamtel includes previous positions as Chief Technical Officer, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the company’s technology strategy and capabilities.
Additionally, he has held roles as Senior Manager in Network Planning and Fixed Network Operations, showcasing his comprehensive understanding of the telecom industry.
However, Mwanza faces a significant challenge as he takes the helm of Zamtel, a company grappling with ongoing struggles and financial losses in a highly competitive telecom market. Despite the sector’s profitability demonstrated by competitors such as Airtel and MTN, Zamtel has faced difficulties in achieving sustainable growth and profitability.
Mwanza’s appointment signals Zamtel’s commitment to addressing these challenges head-on and implementing strategies to navigate the evolving telecom landscape successfully.
With his proven track record and extensive expertise, Mwanza is poised to lead Zamtel towards a path of revitalization and competitiveness in the telecommunications sector.
