New Dual Carriageway to Cut Congestion for Solwezi Motorists
First Quantum Minerals (FQM), through its subsidiary Kansanshi Mining PLC, has commenced the upgrading of the Mitech–Boom Gate Road into a dual carriageway in Solwezi District, in a joint investment with the Zambian Government valued at K104 million.
The project, funded on a 50:50 basis, will see Kansanshi Mining contribute K52 million, matched by government funding, to upgrade the 4.82-kilometre stretch from Mitech traffic lights to the Kansanshi mine gate into a modern, stone-based dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, North-Western Province Minister Robert Lihefu described the initiative as a strong example of public-private partnership driving development.
“This demonstrates what can be achieved when government creates an enabling environment for investment and the private sector responds through meaningful contributions to national development,” he said.
Mr Lihefu noted that the project is expected to ease congestion, improve road safety and address long-standing challenges faced by motorists and residents along the busy corridor.
He also acknowledged Kansanshi Mining’s previous interventions, including road maintenance and dust suppression efforts undertaken at the company’s expense.
Kansanshi Mining Assistant General Manager Axel Kottgen said the project reflects a shared commitment between the company, local authorities and government to support infrastructure development and economic growth in the region.
“This is about partnership, working together to ensure that infrastructure keeps pace with development and supports both mining operations and the wider community,” he said.
Mr Kottgen explained that the company’s K52 million contribution is being provided as a direct in-kind investment, covering construction costs beyond its statutory obligations such as taxes and royalties.
He added that the road will be built to high engineering standards, similar to the Smelter Bypass Road, ensuring durability and the capacity to withstand heavy traffic volumes associated with mining activities.
Solwezi Mayor Remmy Kalepa welcomed the project, pledging continued collaboration to ensure local communities benefit from ongoing development in the district.
The upgraded road is expected to significantly improve transport efficiency, reduce dust and mud-related challenges, and stimulate economic activity for businesses operating along the route. Construction has commenced immediately, with completion targeted before the end of the year.
FQM, a global mining company producing copper, gold and nickel, operates several key assets in Zambia, including the Kansanshi mine and smelter in Solwezi, as well as the Sentinel copper mine and Enterprise nickel mine in Kalumbila.
