Buyers of outdoor power tools are being urged to look beyond the initial purchase price and consider the full cost of ownership, as battery-powered equipment continues to gain ground alongside traditional petrol alternatives.
According to Brad Barthorpe, Sales Manager – Distributors Africa at Husqvarna South Africa, the true value of a tool lies not only in its upfront cost, but in what it costs to run and maintain over time.
“It is not just about what you pay on day one. It is also about what you spend – and save – while using the tool over months and years,” Barthorpe said.
He noted that while battery-powered tools may sometimes come with a higher initial price tag, they can deliver significant savings in the long run.
One of the key advantages, he explained, is more predictable running costs. Unlike petrol-powered tools, which are affected by fluctuating fuel prices, battery-operated equipment allows users to better manage day-to-day expenses. This predictability can support household budgeting for homeowners and improve cost control for professional users.
Maintenance is another area where battery tools offer an advantage. With fewer moving parts and a simpler design, they typically require less servicing. This can result in lower upkeep costs, reduced downtime, and fewer disruptions during critical tasks.
Barthorpe also highlighted the convenience factor. Battery-powered tools eliminate the need for fuel mixing, pull-start mechanisms, and warm-up time, making them quicker and easier to use.
