Hichilema Calls for More Energy Investment to Power Zambia’s Growth
Hakainde Hichilema has called for increased investment in the energy sector, saying ongoing reforms are attracting private sector participation and positioning Zambia for faster economic growth.
Speaking during the 2026 National Delivery Day, the President described the event as a “great day”, noting that interventions under the Presidential Delivery Unit (PDU) and the Presidential Projects Facilitation Division (PPFD) have helped address key bottlenecks and improve service delivery.
Mr Hichilema said Zambia’s ambition to double its economy will depend on a strong and reliable energy sector, adding that investor interest reflects growing confidence in ongoing reforms.
He noted that the country’s target of generating 10 gigawatts of electricity could soon be exceeded as more projects come on stream.
The President also said government is working to restructure ZESCO Limited to strengthen its financial position and improve its capacity to support power generation, transmission and distribution.
He commended the private sector for responding positively to reforms, emphasising that its participation is key to unlocking investment and driving industrial growth.
Mr Hichilema further stressed the need for effective delivery systems to ensure investments translate into tangible outcomes, urging public service workers to prioritise results and service to citizens.
He also highlighted the importance of equitable development, stating that energy infrastructure must reach all parts of the country to support inclusive growth, while promoting local industry through targeted procurement policies.
Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet, Siazongo Siakalenge, called for stronger implementation through accountability, coordination and professionalism across ministerial delivery units.
Meanwhile, Mwangala Chikalashi, Managing Director of Cooma Solar, said the 50-megawatt Cooma Solar Project facilitated by the PDU, has already created about 1,500 jobs during construction, with 150 permanent positions expected.
PDU Coordinator, Kusobile Kamwambi, said systems have been put in place to track progress and ensure effective project delivery, adding that the unit is also leveraging young professionals to strengthen operations.
The President concluded by thanking Zambians for maintaining peace and stability, which he said remain critical in attracting investment and supporting sustainable development.
