FNB Kopala Run 2026 Set to Attract 8,000 Runners
The Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts has officially launched the 2026 FNB Kopala Run, with Minister Elvis Nkandu describing the event as a platform for national development through sport. The annual race is scheduled to take place on 20 June in Kitwe.
Speaking at the launch, Hon. Nkandu emphasised the role of sport in fostering healthy communities, promoting unity, and creating opportunities for young people.
He noted that initiatives such as the Kopala Run not only encourage competition but also promote wellness and stimulate local economic activity.
The Minister highlighted the event’s steady growth, from around 2,000 participants in its early years to more than 6,200 runners last year, with a target of 8,000 participants in 2026.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting sport through policies and programmes that drive youth empowerment, job creation and social cohesion, alongside investments in sports infrastructure and community-based initiatives.
Speaking on behalf of FNB Zambia, Chief Executive Officer Kapumpe Chola said the Kopala Run, now in its fourth year, has evolved into a nationwide movement promoting health, energy and community participation.
She highlighted the bank’s ongoing community initiatives on the Copperbelt, including programmes supporting vulnerable children and public health projects, noting that the event continues to mark FNB’s 17 years of operations in Zambia.
This year’s race will feature 21km, 10km and 5km categories, catering to both professional athletes and social runners. Major Bernard Bwalya added that there are plans to have the Kopala Run recognised on the World Athletics calendar.
Other partners supporting the event include Big Tree Beverages and Stillwater Sports. The launch signals a continued commitment to promoting sport, wellness and community engagement across Zambia.
