MoU with China to Drive Zambia’s Rural and Agricultural Transformation
The Government of the Republic of Zambia and the Chinese African Origins Consortium have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening China-Africa cooperation and advancing rural revitalisation in Zambia.
The agreement seeks to adapt China’s successful rural revitalisation model to Zambia’s local context, focusing on thriving agricultural industries, eco-friendly environments, effective governance, and improved livelihoods. It also aims to develop an integrated demonstration project combining leisure farming, cultural tourism, and agricultural modernisation.
The initiative is expected to support the Government’s agenda of transforming the agricultural sector through expanded irrigated production, in line with the Presidential vision and the Eighth National Development Plan.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, held simultaneously at the Embassy of the Republic of Zambia in Beijing and Cabinet Office in Lusaka, Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet (Finance and Economic Development), Mr. Siazongo Siakalenge, represented by Mr. Bernad Kamphasa, said Government is optimistic about the implementation of the projects under the MoU.
He noted that the initiative aligns with Zambia’s broader economic transformation agenda, particularly in promoting sustainable agriculture and rural development.
Zambia’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, Mr. Ivan Zyuulu, described the signing as a significant milestone in strengthening bilateral cooperation.
He emphasised the need for the timely development of a comprehensive implementation plan, identification of suitable project sites, and the undertaking of feasibility studies to ensure the project’s success.
The ceremony was attended by senior government officials, including Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Permanent Secretary, Dr. Max Choombe; Ministry of Green Economy and Environment Permanent Secretary, Dr. Douty Chibamba; Chief Specialist–Projects at State House, Ms. Winza Mwauluka; and Director of Finance and Economic Development, Mr. Dingiswayo Banda.
