Kansanshi Mine’s Investment in Youth and Sport Earns Government Praise
The Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts Zambia has commended Kansanshi Mine PLC for its continued investment in youth development, sport and the arts, describing the company’s efforts as an important complement to government programmes aimed at empowering young people.
Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts Elvis C. Nkandu said the private sector plays a critical role in supporting government initiatives and expanding opportunities for young people across the country.
Speaking during a meeting with Kansanshi Mine management, the minister said partnerships with institutions such as the mining company help provide platforms for young people to develop their talents and pursue productive activities.
Mr Nkandu noted that many youths who might otherwise be exposed to illicit activities are instead being engaged through sports and development programmes facilitated by the mine.
He also praised the company for its investment in sports infrastructure and activities in Solwezi, including the rehabilitation of Independence Stadium and its support for activities leading up to Youth Day, which will be commemorated on 12 March 2026.
The minister added that private sector partners have continued to complement government efforts in various areas, including supporting sporting events and contributing to the development of coaches.
Meanwhile, Kansanshi Mine PLC General Manager Meiring Burger said the company believes sport plays a vital role in national development and community empowerment.
Mr Burger said the mine currently supports more than 400 athletes and continues to invest in programmes aimed at nurturing young talent within the community.
He added that the company supports more than 30 sporting events each year, including its flagship event, the Kansanshi Marathon, which continues to grow annually and is expected to attract more than 2,500 participants this year.
According to Mr Burger, the mine also helps create opportunities for local athletes to compete at higher levels, including facilitating the participation of one of its athletes in the Comrades Marathon, one of the world’s most prestigious ultra-distance races.
He emphasised that the local community remains central to Kansanshi Mine’s initiatives, adding that the company will continue working with partners to promote sports development and youth empowerment in the region.
