Yango Introduces Electric Motorbikes for Couriers in Lusaka
Yango Zambia, part of the global technology firm Yango Group, has launched an electric motorbike deployment programme in Lusaka aimed at promoting cleaner, energy-efficient urban mobility for partner couriers and motor drivers.
The initiative introduces electric motorbikes powered by swappable batteries and supported by solar-assisted infrastructure, a move expected to reduce the environmental impact of last-mile transport while improving reliability and affordability for delivery partners.
The launch event, held at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre, was officiated by the Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Mike E. Mposha, and attended by the Mayor of Lusaka, Chilando Chitangala, alongside government officials, industry partners, couriers and members of the media.
Implemented in partnership with X-Energi, the project combines electric mobility with locally generated renewable energy solutions. Solar panels support the battery infrastructure, easing pressure on the national power grid during peak demand and enabling couriers to operate even during power interruptions. The model is expected to lower operating costs and improve income stability for drivers using the platform.
The programme will begin with 150 electric motorbikes, with plans to scale up to approximately 1,500 units by the end of the year, supporting broader clean energy and mobility services across Zambia. By lowering barriers to entry, the initiative also aims to promote economic inclusion and expand participation in the delivery and logistics sector.
Delivering a keynote address, Mr Mposha described the initiative as a practical response to Zambia’s sustainability commitments.
“This event marks a pivotal moment in our transport sector’s transition towards cleaner energy, directly supporting the Government’s vision for a robust green economy. By introducing electric assets into the courier and delivery ecosystem, we are taking a tangible step towards decarbonising the transport sector,” he said.
The Minister noted that the project aligns with Zambia’s updated Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement and supports Strategic Development Area Three of the Eighth National Development Plan, which prioritises environmental sustainability.
He added that discussions are underway between Yango and the Lusaka City Council to establish a network of solar-powered charging stations across the city.
Speaking at the launch, Yango Zambia Country Head Kabanda Chewe said the initiative demonstrates the company’s commitment to practical sustainability.
“By combining electric mobility with solar-supported infrastructure, we are helping to reduce emissions while creating more reliable and affordable earning opportunities for our courier and driver partners,” he said.
The initiative reinforces Yango’s role in advancing climate-conscious innovation and inclusive economic development, as Zambia continues to pursue cleaner and more resilient urban transport systems.
