Zambia Participates in 64th UN Commission for Social Development Session in New York
The 64th Session of the United Nations Commission for Social Development (CSocD64) has officially opened at the UN Headquarters in New York, with Zambia participating to advance its national social development and social justice priorities.
The Zambian delegation is led by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, Ms Angela Kawandami. The session runs from 2 to 10 February 2026 under the priority theme, “Advancing Social Development and Social Justice through Coordinated, Equitable, and Inclusive Policies.”
Zambia’s participation is regarded as strategically significant, as it provides a platform to advocate for national development priorities, share experiences from the country’s social protection programmes, and strengthen partnerships aimed at accelerating inclusive development.
The session builds on the outcomes of the Second World Summit for Social Development (WSSD2), held in 2025, which reaffirmed global commitments to social development, inclusive policies, youth empowerment, and climate-resilient social protection systems.
CSocD64 brings together Member States, United Nations entities, and ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organisations to discuss how Summit outcomes can be translated into national and regional policies.
During the session, Zambia is expected to deliver a national statement and participate in several high-level meetings and side events. Ms Kawandami will take part in a panel discussion titled “From Promise to Progress: Advancing Social Justice through Coordinated Action.”
She is also scheduled to participate in the Ministerial Forum, “Leveraging the Outcome of the Second World Summit for Social Development from Copenhagen to Doha: Mobilising National Action towards 2030 and Beyond.” In addition, the Permanent Secretary will join a panel discussion on “Eradicating Poverty and Ensuring Dignity through Resilient Care and Support Systems.”
Ms Kawandami will further engage in an interactive dialogue with senior United Nations officials under the theme, “United for Inclusion: Leveraging the United Nations System for Transformative Social Development.”
Zambia’s participation at CSocD64 highlights the Government’s commitment to promoting social justice, inclusive development, and resilient social protection systems in line with national development priorities and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
