Germany Backs Zambia’s Push for Modernised, Productive Agriculture

Zambia and Germany have reaffirmed their commitment to collaboration in implementing agricultural reforms, with a focus on enhancing productivity and mechanisation in the sector.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 18th Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) in Berlin, Zambia’s Ministry of Agriculture Permanent Secretary for Technical Services, Mr John Mulongoti, highlighted Germany’s ongoing support through initiatives such as the Comprehensive Agriculture Transformation Programme (CATSP).

The programme aims to modernise Zambia’s agriculture sector and transform it into a major driver of economic growth and job creation.

Mr Mulongoti noted that engagements with the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and other stakeholders demonstrated that Zambia is making significant strides in promoting mechanisation and improving agricultural output.

He also pointed to reforms in government programmes, including the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP), which are now yielding tangible results. Zambia has been cited as a model for other countries seeking to transform agriculture from a potential sector into a real contributor to economic development.

“The Forum provided an excellent opportunity to showcase Zambia’s investment opportunities in agriculture,” Mr Mulongoti said. “The interest shown by international companies demonstrates confidence in our sector’s potential.”

Zambia’s delegation to the GFFA included Eng. Romas Kamanga, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation, alongside senior officials from both public and private sectors.

Mr Mulongoti expressed confidence that the discussions held at the Forum would leave a lasting impact and continue to support Zambia’s ongoing agricultural reforms.
