Tourism Ministry Gets New Vehicles to Support GREAT-TDP

The Ministry of Tourism has strengthened the implementation of the Zambia Green, Resilient and Transformational Tourism Development Project (GREAT-TDP) with the acquisition of seven Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles valued at US$193,659.

One vehicle was delivered earlier in 2025, while the remaining six were officially handed over, marking a key milestone in improving project coordination and field operations across the country.

The procurement forms part of the Ministry’s wider efforts under the US$100 million World Bank-financed GREAT-TDP, which seeks to improve the tourism enabling environment, expand access to climate-resilient infrastructure in selected tourism development areas, and unlock economic opportunities in emerging destinations.

Speaking during the handover, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Mr Evans Muhanga, stressed the importance of accountability, productivity and results-driven performance. He instructed officers assigned to the vehicles to ensure they are used strictly for official duties, properly maintained and kept secure at all times.

Mr Muhanga disclosed that three vehicles have been allocated to Tourism Regional Offices in the South-West, Northern-Muchinga and Copperbelt-North-Western regions. Of the remaining four, three will support Project Implementation Unit specialists, while one has been assigned to the Project Coordinator to facilitate project operations.

Aligning his remarks with the Ministry’s 2026 theme, Unblinking Focus on Delivery, Mr Muhanga urged officers to enhance productivity and ensure timely execution of approved work plans. He reiterated President Hakainde Hichilema’s call for a proactive public service focused on delivering measurable results.

He noted that the difficult terrain in several GREAT-TDP operational areas requires durable and reliable vehicles, such as the Toyota Land Cruisers procured, and emphasised the need for responsible use.

Mr Muhanga also thanked the World Bank for its continued support to Zambia’s tourism sector and commended the Project Implementation Unit for efficiently managing the procurement process.

Earlier, Acting Project Coordinator Mr Leonard Nkhoma welcomed the acquisition, saying the vehicles would significantly improve the timely and effective implementation of project activities.

He expressed confidence that the new fleet will positively impact tourism development across multiple regions and contribute to the successful delivery of GREAT-TDP objectives.
