“Zambia Committed to Regional Peace” – Hon. Mulambo Haimbe

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, S.C., M.P., today met Dr Mubita Luwabelwa, the newly appointed Executive Secretary of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), to discuss regional peace and cooperation.

Dr Luwabelwa, a Zambian national, was appointed on 15 November 2025 during the Ninth Ordinary ICGLR Summit of Heads of State and Government held in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. 

He is the first Zambian to assume the position since the establishment of the intergovernmental organisation, which comprises 12 member states.

Discussions focused on Zambia’s continued support to the ICGLR in addressing conflicts in the Great Lakes Region, which pose risks to peace, stability and economic development.

Hon. Haimbe conveyed the Government of the Republic of Zambia’s full support to Dr Luwabelwa and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to playing a mediatory role in promoting regional peace. 

He also encouraged strengthened engagement with cooperating partners to mobilise external financial support for peace initiatives.

Dr Luwabelwa expressed gratitude for the Government’s support and pledged to advance the ICGLR’s strategic focus on the nexus between peace and economic development.
