Zambia, Norway Strengthen Climate and Sustainability Partnership

Zambia and Norway have reaffirmed their commitment to advancing climate action, environmental sustainability, and sustainable development during a bilateral meeting in Nairobi.

The Zambian High Commissioner to Kenya, His Excellency Alfred Musemuna, met with Norway’s Minister of Climate and Environment, His Excellency Andreas Bjelland Eriksen, to explore avenues for enhanced cooperation on climate change, environmental protection, and green economic transformation.

High Commissioner Musemuna expressed gratitude for Norway’s enduring support of multilateral environmental initiatives. He said: “We deeply value our strategic partnership with Norway, anchored in our shared commitment to sustainable development, environmental stewardship, and inclusive economic transformation. Norway has remained a dependable partner, supporting Zambia’s green transition, institutional capacity development, and community-focused environmental programmes.”

The High Commissioner highlighted several areas for future collaboration, including expanding Zambia’s participation in carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, joint investments in forest conservation, restoration, and climate resilience, technical cooperation on carbon accounting, monitoring, and registry systems, and strengthening green finance mobilisation for sustainable development.

Minister Eriksen reaffirmed Norway’s commitment to Zambia’s climate ambitions, stating: “We are committed to working with Zambia to advance high-quality carbon projects, enhance institutional capacity, and unlock climate finance for sustainable development.”

He also announced that Norway looks forward to signing a formal cooperation agreement in Lusaka in January 2026, a milestone that will consolidate the partnership and engage key stakeholders.

The Norwegian Minister further emphasised the potential for collaboration in the energy sector, noting similarities in the hydropower-dependent systems of both nations. He added: “We have much to learn from each other in energy regulation, management, and resilience building.”
