Angola, Zambia Renew Partnership on Defence, Security and Cross-Border Development
The Republic of Angola has reaffirmed its commitment to strong bilateral relations with Zambia, emphasising good neighbourliness, regional stability and deeper strategic cooperation.
Speaking during the official opening of the Ministerial Meeting of the 34th Angola–Zambia Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security in Luanda, Angola’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, said Angola’s foreign policy remains grounded in dialogue, mutual respect and collaboration with neighbouring countries.
He described the partnership with Zambia as a cornerstone of regional peace and security, adding that both nations must continue strengthening joint operational exercises to improve coordination and response to transnational threats.
Mr António also called for enhanced cooperation in tackling organised crime, irregular migration, climate-related security risks and emerging cybersecurity threats, stressing the need for joint frameworks and capacity building in these areas.
He further highlighted the importance of sensitising border communities during security operations to protect civilians and reinforce trust between communities and security forces.
Angola’s Minister of National Defence, Former Combatants and Veterans of the Fatherland, General Lucio Gonçalves Amaral (Rtd), emphasised that infrastructure development, including border facilities, roads and energy projects, would significantly boost trade and integration between the two countries.
He noted that upgrading the Jimbe–Mwinilunga road would enhance cross-border movement and economic activity.
On the Zambian side, Defence Minister Ambrose Lufuma reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to the Joint Permanent Commission and broader bilateral agreements aimed at advancing security, trade and sustainable development.
He underscored Zambia’s strong interest in the swift implementation of the Lobito Corridor Project, including the proposed railway and pipeline linking Benguela to Lusaka, describing it as a key driver of regional economic transformation and connectivity.
Mr Lufuma commended Angola’s continued efforts to strengthen bilateral trade and its role in promoting peace and development within the SADC region.
The meeting concluded with both countries reaffirming their shared vision for a more secure, integrated and economically connected Southern Africa.
