Choma to Host Two New Energy Projects

Choma is emerging as a key location in Zambia’s growing energy diversification agenda as the government intensifies efforts to build a climate-resilient and reliable power system. With the rainy season now underway, solar energy development has taken centre stage in the country’s long-term energy strategy.

Southern Province, home to Zambia’s largest hydropower stations, has in recent days witnessed increased activity linked to new power projects. Last Thursday, the groundbreaking of the 100MW Kafue Gorge Lower Solar Project in Chirundu marked a renewed push towards renewable energy.

On Wednesday, ZESCO Limited unveiled two further strategic ventures: the 35MW Choma Solar Project and the Kafue West–Muzuma 330kV Transmission Line. Both are expected to significantly enhance regional and national energy stability.

The Choma solar plant is part of President Hakainde Hichilema’s goal to deliver 1000MW of solar power, while the transmission line will transport electricity from upcoming projects, including the 600MW Sinazongwe coal plant and the 300MW Maamba expansion project, into the national grid.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony in Muzuma, ZESCO Managing Director Eng. Justin Loongo highlighted the strategic importance of the new line.

He said the Kafue West–Muzuma 330kV transmission line is a critical addition to the interconnectedness of systems within the Southern African Power Pool. He added that the 35MW solar plant will provide clean and reliable electricity in just eight months.

Eng. Loongo emphasised that ZESCO is pushing for accelerated development across all new generation projects, stressing that people and the economy cannot wait any longer for solutions.

The Choma project, to be developed by China Energy Engineering Group-Hunan Electric Power Design Institute, is expected to create about 300 jobs and increase local commercial opportunities.

Choma Mayor Javan Simoloka welcomed the development, describing it as a strong signal that the district is open for investment, innovation and inclusive growth. He said the projects promise jobs, improved infrastructure and a more connected future for residents.

His Royal Highness Chief Cooma also thanked President Hakainde Hichilema for choosing his chiefdom to host the two significant projects.

Speaking on behalf of Energy Minister Makozo Chikote, ZESCO Board Chairperson Vickson Ncube said the unveiling of the Choma Solar Project and the Kafue West–Muzuma Transmission Line reflects responsive leadership backed by strong partnerships.

He said a stable regulatory environment under the New Dawn Government has enabled ZESCO to fast-track development and attract credible investors.
