Gov’t Congratulates Copper Queens on WAFCON Qualification
The Government of Zambia has congratulated the Copper Queens for qualifying for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, following an emphatic 7–2 aggregate victory over Namibia.
Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts, Hon. Elvis C. Nkandu, MP, commended the team for their outstanding performance, describing the qualification as a testament to the rapid progress of women’s football in Zambia.
“The girls have once again shown that they can compete with any team on the continent and deliver results. When you look at where we have come from, it is clear that the women’s game continues to grow. This is the third time this group of players has booked a place at the Africa Cup,” Hon. Nkandu said.
The Minister also praised the technical bench for their dedication and professionalism, which he said had been instrumental in developing a disciplined and competitive squad that continues to make the nation proud.
Hon. Nkandu noted that the Copper Queens have become a constant source of national pride and inspiration, especially during periods when the men’s national team has struggled to meet expectations.
He further highlighted the achievements of the Zambia Under-17 Women’s National Team, which made history by advancing beyond the group stage at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup for the first time.
He said the success underscores the country’s growing investment in youth football, which forms a solid foundation for the senior women’s team.
