Zambia Champions UN Reform and Global Equity at Non-Aligned Movement Summit

Zambia has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the principles of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and called for urgent reform of the United Nations to ensure fair representation of developing countries in global decision-making.

Speaking on behalf of Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, S.C., M.P., Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ms. Margaret Miyoba, Permanent Secretary for Administration at the Ministry, delivered Zambia’s statement at the 19th Midterm Ministerial Meeting of NAM held in Kampala, Uganda.

The meeting was officially opened by Uganda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. General Jeje Odongo, on 15th October 2025.

Ms. Miyoba highlighted that the unequal representation of developing nations in key institutions such as the UN Security Council and international financial bodies undermines global equity. She stressed that reforming these institutions is vital for achieving a just and balanced international order.

On matters of sovereignty and peace, she reiterated Zambia’s support for the peaceful resolution of conflicts in line with the UN Charter, urging dialogue and cooperation over confrontation.

Ms. Miyoba also reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to sustainable development and climate justice, emphasising the importance of bridging the digital divide to ensure equal access to technology in critical sectors such as education, health, and agriculture.

In addition, she appealed for support from NAM Member States for Zambia’s candidate, Judge Martin Musaluke, in the upcoming November 2025 elections for the UN Dispute Tribunal in New York.

Meanwhile, President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, who serves as Chair of the NAM Summit, delivered a keynote address highlighting the need for economic justice, industrialisation, and value addition across the Global South.

He urged member states to unite around “minimum common interests”, including enhanced South-South trade, investment, and tourism, while safeguarding national sovereignty and self-determination.

Zambia’s participation in the meeting highlights its enduring role as a founding voice within NAM and reflects its continued dedication to multilateral diplomacy.

Convened under the theme “Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence”, the meeting concluded with the adoption of the Kampala Final Outcome Document, the Kampala Declaration, and the Declaration on Palestine.
