Caritas Zambia Welcomes Progress but Calls for Clear Action on Load Shedding and Jobs

Caritas Zambia has commended President Hakainde Hichilema for outlining progress in economic growth, market confidence, and rule of law during his address at the opening of the Fifth Session of the Thirteenth National Assembly on 12 September. However, the organisation has urged government to provide more concrete solutions to the country’s pressing challenges.

In a statement, Caritas Zambia Executive Director, Fr Dr Gabriel Mapulanga, noted that while achievements in restoring growth and stability deserved recognition, the President’s speech did not adequately address the daily struggles facing citizens.

Among the concerns raised was the ongoing power crisis. “Issues such as load shedding, which continues to affect the daily lives of Zambians despite the recent rainfall and the filling up of Kariba Dam, require more detailed and actionable solutions. The President’s expression of regret is appreciated, but concrete plans and timelines are essential for restoring public confidence,” Fr Mapulanga said.

The Catholic organisation also highlighted unemployment and the rising cost of living as urgent issues. With more than 100,000 young people graduating annually and only 2,000 to 20,000 jobs being created, Caritas Zambia warned that the gap poses a major threat to livelihoods.

“We urge the government to provide clear and comprehensive strategies to tackle these challenges. Without meaningful employment, the economic progress highlighted by the President will not translate into improved livelihoods,” Fr Mapulanga added.

Caritas Zambia called for focused efforts and tangible improvements in the days ahead, stressing that citizens need practical solutions that address their quality of life.
