CAA and Zambia Airways Strengthen Stakeholder Collaboration
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and Zambia Airways have reaffirmed their commitment to closer collaboration, highlighting the national carrier’s pivotal role in advancing Zambia’s aviation sector and positioning Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (KKIA) as a regional hub.
The reaffirmation came during a courtesy call by the Zambia Airways Board to the CAA Board of Directors today. Speaking at the meeting, CAA Board Chair Dr. Patrick Nkhoma emphasised Zambia Airways’ status as a key stakeholder and strategic partner in the nation’s aviation development.
He highlighted the importance of regular engagement to foster continuous dialogue, strengthen coordination on technical and operational matters, and ensure alignment on regulatory compliance for safe and secure operations.
“Zambia’s strategic position makes it a natural candidate for a regional aviation hub. Collaboration between regulators, government agencies, and local airlines is essential to achieving this goal,” Dr. Nkhoma said.
Zambia Airways Board Chairperson Mr. Jomo Matululu reaffirmed the airline’s commitment to expanding its domestic and regional network while maintaining full compliance with regulatory requirements. He expressed strong support for ongoing cooperation with the CAA and other government agencies, particularly on aircraft registration and operational support.
Mr. Matululu was joined by Chief Executive Officer Mr. Thomas Gabreyohannes Woldesenbet, Manager of Finance and Strategic Planning Mr. Robert Malasha, and Head of Public Relations Mr. Chapu Peter Katongo.
Speaking on behalf of the Director General, Director of Aerodrome Safety and Security Eng. Nathan Kaluba commended Zambia Airways’ previous collaborations, including its support during the ICAO safety audit.
He emphasised that the CAA remains committed to ensuring safety and security beyond compliance audits and described the engagement as a key step toward strengthening stakeholder relations, enhancing operational efficiency, and advancing the shared goal of positioning KKIA as a leading regional aviation hub.
CEO Mr. Woldesenbet highlighted the airline’s operational achievements during the first half of 2025, including a 27% increase in capacity and a 25% rise in passenger numbers. He also outlined plans to strengthen technical and human resource capacity, including training local pilots and developing a maintenance team capable of sustaining operations independently.
The CAA delegation included Board Members Eng. Alfred Akasiwa, Mr. Paul Mulola, and Mr. Lloyd Chembo, together with Director of Finance Mr. Bwalya Mulenga, Acting Director of Flight Safety Standards Mr. Lato Chilala, Acting Director of Air Navigation Services Mr. William Mfune, and Legal Counsel/Secretary to the Board Mrs. Lwisha Shula.
