ZAMBIA ATHLETICS CHAMPION, MUZALA SAMUKONGA, SUFFERS INJURY DURING DIAMOND LEAGUE APPEARANCE
Zambia’s Commonwealth and African Athletics Champion in the 400 meters, Muzala Samukonga, faced an unfortunate setback during a Diamond League appearance in Silesia, Poland on Sunday, July 16, 2023. The athlete suffered a hamstring injury during the race and was unable to finish.
In an official press statement issued by Zambia Athletics, the Secretary-General confirmed the injury and informed the nation about the situation. The authorities were notified promptly after the incident, and they have been in constant communication with Samukonga’s coach.
To assess the severity of the injury and determine the appropriate course of action, Zambia Athletics facilitated a comprehensive medical review. The review was conducted by a specialist who had previously treated legendary sprinter Usain Bolt. According to the doctor’s explanation, hamstring pull injuries are classified into three grades, with grade 3 representing a complete tear of the muscle, which would necessitate surgery.
Fortunately, Samukonga’s injury is classified as minor tears in the muscle, offering a positive outlook for his recovery. The chances of a quick and successful recuperation are considered favorable.
With a clear understanding of the extent of the athlete’s injuries and the associated costs for his treatment, Zambia Athletics plans to write to the government and Samukonga’s employers to provide them with updates on his condition and request financial assistance for the required treatment.
