Copper Queens Celebrate Olympic Qualification and Military Promotions

The Zambian national women’s football team, nicknamed the Copper Queens, are celebrating a double victory. Not only did they secure their qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics, but their captain, Barbara Banda, also received a military promotion.

Following a thrilling match against Morocco in the Olympic qualifiers, the Copper Queens emerged victorious with a 3-2 aggregate win.

Their 2-0 victory at the Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat sealed the deal, with Banda playing a pivotal role.

Lieutenant General Sitali Dennis Alibuzwi, Commander of the Zambian Army, commended the entire team for their fighting spirit, particularly highlighting Banda’s leadership and performance.

In recognition of her contribution, Banda, who is also a member of the Green Buffaloes Women’s Football Club, was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant.

The Commander additionally praised goalkeeper Ngambo Musole for her outstanding saves, including a crucial one on the goal line, which prevented Morocco from scoring.

Musole, along with other Green Buffaloes players who participated in the match, will also receive promotions within the military.

Zambia, along with Nigeria, will represent Africa at the Olympics.  The Copper Queens have been placed in Group B, where they will face off against powerhouses like the USA, Germany, and Australia.
