Zambia Prepares for Pan-African Youth Adaptation Forum

A delegation from the Global Centre on Adaptation (GCA) has paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Education, Honourable Douglas Syakalima, as preparations intensify for the Pan-African Youth Adaptation Forum, scheduled to take place from 8 to 9 August at the University of Zambia’s Great East Road Campus.

During the meeting, Mr Syakalima reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to the Education for All policy, describing the school system as both a crucial social control mechanism and a key enabler in climate resilience strategies.

He revealed that pupils nationwide are actively engaged in tree-planting initiatives, part of Zambia’s broader efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change, particularly in light of the 2023/2024 drought.

He further stressed the need for African-led solutions, stating: “Africa must source its own solutions because there is no longer brain drain but brain sharing.”

Adriana Valenzuela, Youth Leadership and Education Lead at GCA, commended Zambia’s prioritisation of climate change within its education sector. “I am optimistic your focus will foster the development of a climate-resilient economy that others across the continent can learn from,” she said.

The delegation also included Ms Ruth Nawakwi, Executive Director of Inclusive Education for Sustainable Development (IESD), who reaffirmed her organisation’s commitment to promoting youth participation in climate adaptation.

She emphasised IESD’s inclusive engagement approach to ensure all voices are heard in shaping climate resilience.

IESD Board Chairperson, Mr John Lijimu Jnr, underscored the value of inclusivity in building sustainable, resilient communities.

The forthcoming forum will unite youth leaders and representatives from across Africa to exchange innovative adaptation solutions and enhance regional cooperation. The event will provide a platform for youth-led discussions on climate resilience, with a strong emphasis on integrating education and community involvement.

Concluding the meeting, Honourable Syakalima expressed confidence that Zambia’s proactive climate education and youth engagement strategies will make a significant contribution to Africa’s wider climate resilience ambitions.

As the nation prepares to host this landmark event, the government has reaffirmed its dedication to fostering inclusive, innovative, and sustainable approaches to climate adaptation, in alignment with the global agenda championed by the Global Centre on Adaptation and its partners.
