Sino-Metals Begins Payouts, Reinforces Pledge to Community Development

Sino-Metals Leach Zambia Limited has officially launched a comprehensive community compensation exercise, reaffirming its commitment to corporate social responsibility and community development.

The initiative comes after final Government approval of the compensation report, enabling the company to commence payments within 48 hours.

At the launch ceremony in Chambishi, Assistant CEO Mr. Martin Amukusana said Sino-Metals approached the matter with urgency and respect for the affected residents. “This is not merely a fulfilment of our responsibility, but also a reaffirmation of the company’s long-standing commitment to the community and the nation,” he said.

Mr. Amukusana also highlighted the company’s continued material support, providing food, water, and financial aid, during the waiting period prior to official compensation approval.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, local farmer Mr. Moses Kasongo praised the transparency and speed of the process. “The compensation we’ve received exceeds what we would normally earn from selling our crops. Sino-Metals has shown genuine concern for our wellbeing,” he said.

Government representatives commended the company’s proactive approach. A Ministry of Agriculture official described the process as a model of corporate accountability, while Copperbelt Minister Hon. Elisha Matambo emphasized that “this has been a long process, but necessary to ensure fairness. We thank the farmers for their patience and commend Sino-Metals for honouring the agreement.”

The company also confirmed that despite a six-month operational suspension, no employees were retrenched, and full salaries were paid. Over K250 million has so far been invested in restoration efforts, including tailings dam repairs.

Sino-Metals further pledged to continue its CSR work, citing previous efforts such as classroom construction and rehabilitation, borehole drilling, and medical donations. “The compensation exercise is only the beginning,” said Mr. Amukusana. “We remain committed to inclusive and responsible mining.”

The company says its long-term vision is to actively support local livelihoods and complement government development goals in the areas where it operates.
