HRC Demands Probe After Deadly Mufumbwe Mine Clash

The Human Rights Commission (HRC) has expressed deep concern over the fatal confrontation between informal miners and security forces at Kinkonge Gold Mine in Mufumbwe District, North-Western Province, which occurred on July 6, 2025. The clash reportedly left several people dead and others injured.

In a strongly worded statement, HRC spokesperson Mweelwa Muleya called for “restraint and calm” to avoid further violence and urged authorities to conduct “thorough investigations” into the incident.

“The right to life is so sacred and fundamental that its protection must be prioritised in all circumstances, especially during law enforcement,” Muleya said.

The Commission emphasized that any use of force must be proportionate and in accordance with the law. It called for those responsible for the deaths to be held accountable under Article 12 of the Zambian Constitution.

While condemning the loss of civilian lives, the HRC also condemned the attack on law enforcement officers, noting that the safety of police and security personnel is equally vital.

The Commission appealed to informal and unlicensed miners to vacate the site and pursue dialogue with the government as a way forward, warning that continued illegal mining could worsen tensions.

The HRC further urged all law enforcement agencies involved in the operation to strictly observe human rights standards and the rule of law during interventions.

The situation remains tense, and the public is watching closely for the government’s next move.
