LONGi Green Energy to Invest in 100MW Solar Power Project in Zambia by December 2025

The Zambian Government has welcomed plans by Chinese renewable energy giant, LONGi Green Energy Technology Co., to invest in a 100-megawatt (MW) solar power plant in Zambia.

The proposed project, expected to be operational by December 2025, is part of LONGi’s broader ambition to eventually scale up to 200MW, signaling a major boost to the country’s renewable energy landscape.

The announcement follows a courtesy visit by LONGi executives to the Minister of Energy, Mr. Makozo Chikote, MP, in Lusaka, where the company laid out its investment proposal.

The Minister expressed strong support for the initiative, highlighting it as a strategic addition to Zambia’s clean energy goals and its national plan to add 1,000MW to the power grid.

“We are determined to unlock Zambia’s energy investment potential by ensuring a predictable and supportive environment. The timely execution of such projects is vital to our national development agenda,” said Minister Chikote, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to facilitating renewable energy investments.

To accelerate the project, the Minister directed ZESCO Limited and the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) to work closely with LONGi and prioritize the regulatory and operational processes required to kick-start development.

LONGi has requested Government assistance in identifying a suitable project site and building partnerships with local companies, particularly those whose solar energy projects have stalled due to implementation challenges.

LONGi’s engagement with Zambia stems from its participation as a strategic energy partner during President Hakainde Hichilema’s official visit to China in 2024.

The company is a global leader in solar technology and one of the largest manufacturers of solar panels worldwide. Its investment is expected to significantly contribute to Zambia’s energy security, while promoting green industrialization and climate resilience.
