Gov’t Strengthens Market Linkages to Empower MSMEs and Cooperatives

The Zambian Government has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing market linkages for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and cooperatives, aiming to drive economic growth and sustainable development.

Minister of Small and Medium Enterprise Development, Hon. Elias Mubanga, made the announcement during a visit to a Cooperative-led horticulture farm in Isoka district.

He highlighted the importance of connecting local producers to formal markets through capacity building and strategic partnerships.

“We want our MSMEs to grow and contribute to economic growth, and cooperatives to foster sustainable development in the country. This can be done when we facilitate value addition through market linkages,” Hon. Mubanga said.

The Ministry has signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with major retail chains including Shoprite, Pick n’ Pay, and Choppies. These agreements are designed to provide SMEs with consistent access to established markets for their produce and products.

One notable example is Nalupalala Multipurpose Cooperative, which has embarked on a major agricultural initiative focused on citrus fruits—particularly Mandarin oranges—and staple crops such as maize. These products are already attracting buyers from neighboring countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“I am impressed that people are coming all the way from the DRC just to buy these fruits, especially oranges and nutches,” said the Minister, expressing optimism over the project’s potential impact on food security and economic diversification.

Hon. Mubanga emphasized that the Ministry is dedicated to empowering small-scale farmers to scale up their operations and meet both local and international market demands.
