Huawei Unveils Africa’s First Leading Smart Warehouse, Ushering in a New Era in Logistics
Huawei South Africa has officially launched its groundbreaking smart warehouse in Johannesburg, setting a new benchmark for logistics innovation across the continent. Spanning 14,000 square meters, the AI-powered facility is equipped with state-of-the-art green energy, e-security, and automated logistics systems, collectively known as the GEM framework.
Will Meng, CEO of Huawei South Africa, emphasized the strategic importance of the investment, highlighting that South Africa’s logistics market—valued at $93 billion in 2024—is projected to reach $157 billion by 2032. “This facility represents more than growth; it’s a leap toward agile, tech-driven supply chains that ensure long-term competitiveness,” said Meng.
The warehouse integrates green power solutions, including a 150KWp photovoltaic system that supplies 90% of its daytime energy needs. As Herman Fourie, Senior Solutions Manager at Huawei Digital Power, explained, this move addresses rising electricity costs and promotes sustainable operations.
Security is also paramount. The facility uses AI-enabled, full-color surveillance systems capable of detecting hazards in real-time—even in low-light conditions—while eliminating the need for large control rooms.
The logistics operations are fully digital, with paperless PDA scanners, Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), and Forklifts (AGFs) drastically boosting efficiency. According to Logistics Manager Stevin John Du Plessis, pickers at the facility can process nearly twice as many orders per hour compared to traditional warehouses. “Our smart systems enhance productivity by up to 80%,” he noted.
York Ning, Director of Enterprise Marketing & Solutions, stated that Huawei’s warehouse management system intelligently coordinates logistics operations, integrating autonomous tools to raise employee productivity by 37%.
The launch was attended by industry leaders and partners, including Africa Global Logistics, which has worked with Huawei for 15 years. COO Fergus Fitch announced plans to integrate Huawei technologies in their upcoming flagship logistics campus in Africa, covering 35,000 square meters and featuring a five-story office block.
In Meng’s words, “Huawei is committed to driving Africa’s digital transformation by offering sustainable, secure, and smart warehousing solutions that meet today’s needs and anticipate tomorrow’s opportunities.”
