WSUP Rebrands to Champion Climate-Resilient Urban Water and Sanitation Across Africa and Asia

Water & Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP) has officially rebranded as Water and Sanitation for Urban Populations, unveiling a new identity and an ambitious 2025–2030 strategy that focuses on building climate-resilient and inclusive water and sanitation systems across fast-growing cities in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.

The rebrand marks WSUP’s 20th anniversary and reflects the organisation’s evolution into a systems-change leader in urban WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene). The shift comes at a critical moment, with urban populations expected to increase by 2 billion by 2050 and climate change exacerbating droughts, floods, and water stress. These pressures are already overwhelming city infrastructure, especially in low-income areas.

WSUP’s new name recognises the complexity and diversity of the populations it serves, moving away from the term “urban poor” in favour of more inclusive language. The organisation’s updated mission centres on strengthening citywide systems, fostering collaboration between governments, utilities, regulators, and communities to deliver services that are sustainable, equitable, and climate-resilient.

“Our new name and strategy reflect the urgency to build city-wide systems that work for everyone—especially those in low-income communities,” said Ed Mitchell, WSUP’s Chief Executive Officer. “Urban water and sanitation are no longer just about pipes and toilets—it is about climate resilience, social equity, and economic survival.”

WSUP’s 2025–2030 Strategic Plan outlines five key focus areas: strengthening utility and service provider systems, embedding climate adaptation and mitigation into service delivery, promoting inclusive access for women, migrants, and vulnerable groups, unlocking new climate and WASH financing opportunities, and driving innovation through data and evidence-based solutions.

The organisation’s past impact is notable—improving water, sanitation, and hygiene access for more than 42 million people. Its renewed vision aims to build on that success, ensuring urban residents in high-risk areas are better protected against climate shocks, disease, and displacement.
