Gov’t Applauds FQM for Advancing Gender Equality in Mining
The Zambian government has commended First Quantum Minerals (FQM) for its continued efforts in promoting gender equality within the mining sector, ensuring that women and girls have equal opportunities to contribute to the country’s economic development.
Speaking at the 2025 International Women’s Day celebrations under the theme “For All Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment,” Vice President W.K. Mutale Nalumango praised the mining giant for creating more employment opportunities for women.
“There are now many women employed as equipment operators at FQM,” said Mrs. Nalumango.
She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to gender-responsive policies aimed at increasing access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for women and girls.
“We remain steadfast in our commitment to ending child marriage, promoting girls’ education, and supporting early childhood rehabilitation. Significant strides have also been made in maternal and child healthcare, with advancements in reproductive health services,” she added.
The Vice President further highlighted ongoing government efforts to strengthen legal frameworks that support survivors of gender-based violence and ensure a more inclusive healthcare system.
FQM Government Relations Superintendent Winnie Kakunta emphasized the company’s dedication to inclusivity in the mining sector, recognizing diversity as a driver of innovation and long-term sustainability.
“We actively support the empowerment of women and girls through skills training, educational initiatives, health programs, and leadership development. We engage with our operators and the surrounding communities to promote inclusivity,” she said.
Ms. Kakunta further revealed that FQM has implemented training and advanced learning opportunities for women at different career stages, helping them progress in the mining industry. The company has also introduced policies aimed at increasing female participation in leadership roles.
Zanaco Chief Executive Officer Mukwandi Chibesakunda acknowledged the progress made in gender equality across Africa but stressed that more needs to be done.
“We commend the United Nations for its unwavering commitment to addressing gender inequality, as outlined in the 2023 National Gender Policy. This dedication to building a just and equitable society, where women’s achievements are recognized, is commendable. We assure you of our continued and growing support,” she said.
FQM has been a key player in Zambia’s mining industry for nearly 30 years, operating two of the country’s largest mines—Kansanshi Mining PLC and FQM Trident Limited—both located in North-Western Province.
With over 19,000 employees, FQM contributes significantly to the country’s economy, particularly in the Copperbelt and North-Western provinces. In 2024 alone, the company paid nearly USD 374 million in taxes and mineral royalties to the national treasury.
As Zambia continues to push for greater gender inclusivity, partnerships between the government and the private sector remain crucial in ensuring that women and girls thrive in all industries, including mining.
